Minnesota Manufacturing Index | June 2026 Report: Manufacturing Recovery Gains Momentum Amid Margin Pressure

The June 2026 Minnesota Manufacturing Index points to a cautiously optimistic Minnesota manufacturing economic outlook, with several key indicators signaling that the industry has entered a broad-based recovery. Industrial production reached one of its highest levels in four years, durable goods manufacturing GDP reached a five-year high, and Minnesota’s Business Conditions Index remained above the expansion threshold for the seventh consecutive month.

At the same time, Minnesota manufacturers continue to face challenges that could affect profitability through the remainder of 2026. Producer prices remain elevated, capacity utilization is relatively low, and export activity continues to lag. These conditions create additional pressure on margins even as demand, production and business confidence improve.

Minnesota manufacturing GDP posted its fourth consecutive quarter of growth in Q1 2026, while durable goods manufacturing GDP reached $30.1 billion, its highest level in five years. The state’s manufacturing sector also continues to represent a significant share of the Minnesota economy, accounting for 11.5% of total GDP in Q1 2026.

Labor and demand indicators provide additional signs of recovery. New orders reached 59.4 in June, employment returned to expansion, and weekly hours worked by production employees increased in 2026. Business confidence has also remained above its baseline for three consecutive months, the first time this has occurred since 2022.

For manufacturing companies in Minnesota, the opportunity is to capitalize on stronger demand while protecting margins. Strategic pricing, proactive input-cost management, efficient use of available production capacity and disciplined labor planning will be important as manufacturers navigate the second half of 2026 and prepare for 2027.
